Men (and women) are dogs
I have often pondered why we as a country, cannot seem to get our act together. Why is it we Filipinos continue on with an existence that lacks the very essence of living. Why the country formerly known as the 'Pearl of the Orient' can no longer compete with it's Asian neighbors. Why bountiful natural resources, large supplies of manpower, and a seemingly endless stream of talented individuals isn't enough. After numerous bottles of beer, daily 'spacing outs,' and endless discussions with whoever, I have come to a very simple conclusion.
Among the seething masses, the grind of economic machinery, the halls of the palace (especially), one thing exists in scarcity. If not lacking in existence completely.
And that is love for country.
From big time politicians to the common masa, it is hardly ever seen. What we see instead is corruption and self interest. Syndicates plying the streets looking for victims. Scoundrels sawing off the metal railings from flyovers... but it doesn't stop there.
Oh no, no siree.
It continues right back to our doorsteps... yes, right back to us.
In that brief moment we lose self-consciousness of our social responsibilities, and our self-interest rears it's ugly head, we casually and nonchalantly drop that candy wrapper or cigarette butt on the pavement. Or we open our fly and piss on the most convenient spot. Even if it happens to be the wall of our neighbors house (or his car's tire, depending on which happens to be closer.) That trash we dump on the street corner that clearly isn't a dumpsite.
Come on now, how is that a way to live?
I have heard a lot of people say that the Philippines is going to the dogs. Well I think the dogs have already gotten to it. As a matter of fact, I think they already had it long loooooong ago.
Arf arf.
